Painting relates to both art and life. Neither can be made. (I try to act in the gap between the two)” - Robert Rauschenberg- 1959
Yogaścittavrtti nirodhah (1.2 Yoga Sutras)
Yoga is the stilling of the turnings of the mind.
The square shaped paintings were rotated multiple times during the course of their creation. Colors, shapes, textures, transparencies act as metaphors for the tens of thousands of thoughts we humans have each day. This exploration is a an effort to witness these thoughts, these fluctuations and notice them for what they are… just turnings of the mind as they go around and around.
(Many paintings can be turned or displayed on any angle)
These individual turnings took on a life of their own and wanted a dialogue with each other on each of the four angles. Often the two square panels started speaking in the language of dualities: love & fear; triumph & disaster; tear & smile; human & angel; freind & foe; jealousy & generosity.
Thus the painter and the viewer become witnesses or eaves-droppers to the soundless dialogue exploring these dualities in their on-going conversations.
(Some diptychs can be rotated on all 4 angles
matching up- allowing the viewer to experience the full expression of the work.)
“The photographs fell from her hands into the lap of Ganga Ma”
A modern take on on my fascination with Indian miniature
paintings. This series came about as a consequence of exploring Richter’s O’Brist, my trips to Varanasi and Rei Kawakubo’s meditation on imperfection. I imagine these photo-etchings were a result of accidentally slipping from my hands into the lap of the Ganges River and the results, are a destruction and simultaneous re-birth.
These explore color fields, texture and an uncomplicated aesthetic.
Scale plays a major factor, with catalysts for these works coming from nature and mediation along a with a nod to the Abstract Expressionists.
